Training Dogs Nationwide - Andrea Collashaw, ABCDT

Updated Wednesday, December 03, 2008 : 2:55:57 PM
Andrea Collashaw, ABCDT, graduated Animal Behavior College in July of 2006 and is thrilled to already be working as a professional dog trainer. Ms. Collashaw is employed at Pet Peeves, a board and training facility where she has already successfully trained over 75 dogs! Every other week, Andrea trains up to ten dogs from all over the country for seven consecutive days. She teaches them hand signals and voice commands for all the basic behaviors such as sit, down, stay, wait, come and heel. When the week is over, Andrea begins working with the owners on how to maintain these behaviors with the dogs. For any animal lover this job is a dream come true, so let’s go back and see how this dream became a reality for Andrea.

Andrea started off working in accounting and management for corporate America for over 12 years. “I had a great job- great pay/benefits/respect, but I traveled too much and missed my family and animals at home,” says Andrea. Andrea always knew that she was born to do something with animals and was intent on working in the animal industry. She also realized how important the right education was, “I knew it would be irresponsible for me to work with animals without the proper training,” she says. Since she had no prior experience other then being a loving pet owner, she decided to research a variety of different schools. Andrea finally came across Animal Behavior College (ABC) and knew it was the right school for her because it offered a convenient in home-study component with a hands-on externship near her home in Florida. This was a program she could do while still working because it fit around her schedule.

While going through the program, Andrea was impressed with how thorough the curriculum was, the tests were fair and really made her study. The most valuable part of the program for Andrea was the externship; she got great hands on training that she otherwise would have never received on her own. In order to provide Andrea with her hands-on training experience, ABC paired Andrea up with her mentor trainer Wendy Kelly, M.Ed., Applied Animal Behaviorist and owner of Pet Peeves training company. While there, she apprenticed with Wendy in real life situations and was hired upon graduation.

Today, Andrea is the proud mother of several rescues, including, six dogs, a cat, a rabbit and an iguana. If that doesn’t keep her busy enough, she is a full time dog trainer at Pet Peeves. She has the opportunity to train dogs from all over the country and truly make a difference in the lives of the dogs and their owners. In her spare time, this dedicated, hard-working dog lover also creates pastel portraits of people’s pets and proudly states her business has really boomed since she started training professionally. Andrea says, “I know I’m doing the right thing since I graduated from ABC because doors keep opening for me. I truly believe I am doing what I was meant to do. I would advise anyone who is on the fence about their career path, to make the decision to follow their dream. Following my dream has afforded me the opportunity to help dogs become more adoptable and be appreciated members of their families.”
