Carl Delegato, ABCDT

Thursday, February 25, 2010 : 3:57:06 PM
In 2008, Carl Delegato, a general accountant, decided he could no longer work in a cubicle. and decided to pursue his dream of working with animals. Today, Carl and his wife, Sondra, own their own dog training business with plans to expand into a full-service shop that also offers pet grooming and doggie daycare.

What impressed Carl about ABC was the extensive curriculum content. “I read a lot of dog training and behavior books, including B.F. Skinner and Karen Pryor,” said Carl. “ABC’s courses are on the cutting edge of today’s methodologies for dog training. In fact, I still refer to my books before a class or if I have a problem dog at an in-home session,” he says.

Carl attributes his success to ABC’s Certified Dog Trainer program which includes an in-home study portion along with a hands-on externship. He believes that, “dog training is one of those skills you can read about, but you have to actually go out and do it to really understand the methodology.”

As luck would have it, Carl met his future business partner, Theresa Cure, ABCDT, while going through his externship. Together, they planned on using their comprehensive education and experience from ABC to create an even more successful business venture.

In order to help start his own dog training company, Carl used stage nine of the ABC curriculum titled Business Building, to guide him through each stage of the process. Carl proudly launched Up Dog soon after completing his ABC certification last May.

Following in her husband’s footsteps, Carl’s wife Sondra, is currently enrolled in ABC’s Certified Grooming Instruction program. Her goal is to help supplement their dog training business by offering clients a more broad range of services that will help increase their business. Both Carl and Sondra are grateful they choose to follow their passion of working with animals and are reaping the benefits by being the proud owners of their own business.
