Keeping Your Dog Active

Daily Activities for Busy Dog Owners

It’s easier than you think to exercise your dog’s mind and body on a regular basis.

Take a short break from your busy schedule and toss a ball or two; your dogs will love you for it.

Dogs love activities. Whether it’s an early morning walk, a game of fetch in the backyard, or a visit to the dog park, activities you provide your dog help him burn off energy, stimulate his mind and bond more closely with you.

If you have a busy schedule, you might have trouble finding a way to provide your dog with activity every single day. However, it’s easier than you think. Even 5 minutes a day can do a lot to keep your dog interested in life and in what you have to offer.

Here are some suggestions for daily activities you can do with your dog. Doing just one of these actions each day will make your dog a happy camper:

Take a Walk

Even if you only have time for a 10-minute walk, it’s okay. Your dog will love it. Getting out of the house with you at his side will not only help keep him from going stir crazy, it counts as quality time with Mom or Dad.

Toss a Ball

Do you have a few minutes before you leave for work in the morning? Take five and toss a ball to your dog. Even if you don’t have a yard, you can still do this. Your dog will love the exercise and attention.

Practice Obedience

Your dog should know a few basic dog obedience commands such as sit, stay and down. Spend just a little time before work or when you come home to practice what he knows. Use his favorite treats as a reward, and he’ll soon be anxious for more schooling.

Have an errand or two to run? Take your dog with you; she’ll enjoy getting out of the house.

Teach a Trick

If you have 15 minutes, start working on a trick. Shake hands, roll over or sit up are a few easy ones. Pick one and focus on teaching it. Give treats as a reward, and quit once your dog is getting the hang of it. Do it again for a few minutes a day until he has it down.

Go for a Ride

If you have to run to the store, or need to drop something at the dry cleaners, take your dog along for the ride. It’s a great way to get him out of the house and have him spend some time with you. Don’t leave him alone in the car if the weather is hot. In the summertime, take him along on trips to the pet store so he can come inside with you.

Tag Along

If you have a dog who tends to lie around doing nothing all day, put a leash on her and clip it to your belt while you do your chores. Your dog will have to follow you around the house, which will give her some exercise and help her feel like she’s helping you.

By spending just a little bit of time with your dog every day, you’ll make him feel loved and special. In return, he will be more focused on you and will learn to anticipate your every word. In addition, you’ll be free from guilt, knowing that even though you have a busy life, you always make time for your dog.
